South Dakota’s History Center

Stories. People. Places. Our Shared Journey.

The 63,000-square-foot South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center is home to South Dakota’s history and one of the state’s premier cultural attractions. Opened in 1989 as part of South Dakota’s centennial celebration, the facility houses four of the South Dakota State Historical Society’s five program areas...Archives, Historic Preservation, Museum, and Research & Publishing. The State Archaeological Research Center is located in Rapid City. The South Dakota Historical Society Foundation is also headquartered at the Cultural Heritage Center. The South Dakota State Historical Society is the steward of our state’s stories - collecting, preserving, interpreting, and sharing South Dakota’s history for present and future generations.

The South Dakota Historical Society Foundation proudly supports this mission by providing private funding for exhibits, collections care, educational programs, publications, and special initiatives that preserve and share South Dakota’s history. Together, the Society and Foundation ensure that our state’s stories remain accessible, engaging, and inspiring for generations to come.
