Volunteer Opportunities 
Our volunteers make a difference. They help us collect, preserve and share South Dakota’s stories. Whether you enjoy meeting people, working behind the scenes, helping with fundraising, or sharing your skills from home, there is a place for you.

Volunteering is a great way to meet interesting people, learn more about South Dakota history, and make a meaningful difference.

Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older. Most volunteers give of their time on a regularly scheduled basis. You might want to work one day a week, or several days a week. You might want to concentrate on one specific job, or volunteer in several areas. Our goal is to work with you. 

Current volunteer opportunities 

  • Heritage Store (SD State Capitol, Pierre) & (Cultural Heritage Center, Pierre) - Help visitors discover unique books, gifts, and South Dakota treasures. Volunteers assist customers, answer questions, and help create a welcoming experience.
     
  • Office Work (Pierre & Remote Work Available)  - Opportunities may include administrative tasks, research, data entry, mailings, and other special projects.
     
  • Foundation Board - 3 year commitment.  Provide leadership and advance the mission of the South Dakota Historical Society Foundation.
     
  • Development Committee  - work with a great group of voluneers to raise funds for the capital campaign and other needs to support the preservation and education of SD history. 
     
  • Finance Committee - Share your financial expertise to help support the Foundation’s stewardship and financial oversight.
     
  • Policy Committee - Help review and strengthen policies that support the Foundation’s work and good governance.
     
  • Social Media & Website Assistance - Use your communications, writing, photography, or digital skills to help share South Dakota history and the Foundation’s work with a broader audience.
     
  • Have Another Idea? We welcome volunteers with skills, interests, and ideas that may not fit one of the opportunities listed above. Tell us how you would like to help.
