In November’s History Talks, author Susan Wefald will discuss her recently published book, Drought, Dust, & Creativity: North Dakota’s Art Scene During the Great Depression. Wefald explores how artists responded to the hardships of the 1930s through government funded programs and independent creative efforts. From American Indian beadwork to fine art and craftsmanship, these works reveal how creativity offered hope and reflected the resilience, traditions, and pride of North Dakotans during a challenging era.

The South Dakota Historical Society Press publishes award winning books exploring the history of South Dakota and the Northern Great Plains.
