This event will be held in-person at the Cultural Heritage Center in the Vogt Education Room or via Zoom. Maddie Ferrell and Liz Almlie, from the South Dakota Preservation Office, will be presenting their talk “Preserving Space: The Path to Preservation through the National Register of Historic Places.”

History is all around you! In your neighborhood, on the street across from your school, or right down the road there might be a building that is weaved into South Dakota’s history and legacy. Join Liz Almlie and Maddie Ferrell from the South Dakota State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) as they recount recent nominations to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) such as the Smith House in Madison, Wendt House in Canton, the Stroppel Hotel in Midland, and the Mettler Cattle Barn in Menno. Discussions will also include the NRHP listing process and how property owners can leverage funding programs to preserve their properties. Explore some of these unique buildings and find out how to keep South Dakota’s history alive!
