Museum of South Dakota State Historical Society announces new "Smithsonian Sunday" program

The Museum of the South Dakota State Historical Society, located at the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre, is offering a new program related to its new status as a Smithsonian Institution Affiliate.

On the second Sunday of each month, the museum will offer a special video program from one of the Smithsonian Museums at 2 p.m. CDT in the Education Room at the Cultural Heritage Center. There will be no fee to attend the program, but regular admission will be charged for those wanting to visit the museum.

“We are especially excited to get this program going,” commented Jay Smith, director of the museum. “We are going to concentrate first on building an audience for this type of program by offering selected programming from one of the Smithsonian museums each month. In providing diverse programming, we want to develop an understanding of what our audience wants to see while we work on other aspects of our Affiliate relationship.”

The South Dakota State Historical Society became a Smithsonian Affiliate in January.

Future Smithsonian Sunday programs will be held on Aug. 11, Sept. 8, Oct. 13, Nov. 10 and Dec. 8.

The museum is developing a Smithsonian teacher workshop and a lecture series.
