Maggie Mellette Program

Celebrate South Dakota’s first 125 years by learning more about its first first lady.
Margaret Wylie Mellette will be portrayed by Joanita Kant of Brookings in a program that begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, at the Cultural Heritage Center.

Maggie was the wife of Arthur Calvin Mellette, the last governor of Dakota Territory and first governor of South Dakota. She was South Dakota’s first lady from 1889 to 1893. Everyone is welcome to attend the free program, made possible by a grant from the South Dakota Humanities Council.
