Cornerstone time capsules theme for next Family Fun Saturday at Cultural Heritage Center

Visitors are invited to come and create their own time capsule cornerstone on Family Fun Saturday on June 10 from 10-11:30 a.m. CDT at the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre.

All materials are provided and children should be accompanied by an adult. There is no admission fee to the museum during the program. While items for the time capsules will be provided, visitors are encouraged to bring small items of their own to put in the 3-inch cardboard cornerstones. Notes, small toys, photographs – all would be suitable.

The South Dakota State Capitol’s cornerstone was laid in June 1908. As a time capsule, the cornerstone had a variety of items sealed inside – newspapers, photographs, coins and blueprints.

“South Dakota’s capitol is a beautiful neoclassical building,” said Museum Director Jay Smith. “It started with the laying of the cornerstone. Now our visitors can commemorate that occasion by creating a cornerstone time capsule of their own.”

The museum will be switching to summer hours on Tuesday, May 30. It will be open 9 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 1-4:30 on Sundays through Memorial Day. For more information call (605) 773-3458.
