Over 170 species of butterflies make their home in South Dakota, and the public is invited to come and celebrate these flying creatures by making a clothespin butterfly on Saturday, May 13, from 10-11:30 a.m. CDT at the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre.

“When butterflies and moths start to flitter around, it is a sure sign that warm weather has arrived,” said Jay Smith, director of the Museum of the South Dakota State Historical Society. “Our Saturday Family Fun Programs have been a big hit. Creating fish, snowflakes and bunnies has been great fun, and making butterflies will be a good time, too. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy making crafts and visiting the museum galleries.”

All supplies are provided, but children should be accompanied by an adult. There is no additional fee to participate in the program.
