While the nation celebrates the annual rite of spring known as “Opening Day” in professional baseball, the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center has an exhibit on display that celebrates baseball tradition in South Dakota. “Play Ball! The National Pastime in South Dakota” will be on display in the Hogen Gallery of the Museum through April of 2016.

“Play Ball!” traces the history of baseball in South Dakota from the territorial era to the present through artifacts, images, video and hands-on activities that will inspire, educate and entertain all audiences. Now is a great time to visit the exhibition as baseball begins around the nation and in our own backyards.

“Baseball is woven through the fabric of South Dakota history,” commented Jay Smith, museum director. “It has influenced community development and built community traditions across the state that still come alive each spring. We are delighted to invite the citizens of South Dakota and our visitors to visit the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre and enjoy this remarkable exhibition.”

The museum and the exhibit are open during regular museum hours of 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. CDT Monday through Saturday, and 1-4:30 p.m. on Sunday. There is an admission fee for adults, but kids 17 and under are free.
