State Historical Society to Host Smithsonian Sunday Program on Aug. 10
The Museum of the South Dakota State Historical Society will host a special webcast of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries program entitled “Knowledge, Noise and the End of Information” presented by David Weinberger at 2 p.m. CDT on Sunday, Aug.10, at the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre.
The program, in the center’s education room, is sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution Libraries, the Office of the Chief Information Officer and Smithsonian Institution Archives. This lecture is part of the series on the future of libraries, museums and archives given in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries.
Weinberger is currently a fellow at the Berkman Institute on Internet and Society at Harvard Law School. In 1999, he co-authored “The Cluetrain Manifesto,” a set of 95 theses examining the impact of the Internet on markets and organizations. His latest book is “Everything is Miscellaneous: The Power of the New Digital Disorder.” The program is about how the Internet has changed the definition of knowledge over the past few decades.
“This is a very interesting program,” said Jay Smith, director of the Museum of the State Historical Society. “There can be no doubt that the Internet has dramatically impacted our everyday lives as well as the manner in which we communicate with others. This program addresses some of the issues as well as the benefits of that impact.”
There is no fee to view the program, but standard admission fees apply for visitors wanting to go into the museum galleries. “Knowledge, Noise and the End of Information” was originally broadcast in 2008.
The State Historical Society became a Smithsonian Affiliate in January 2013, and it is the only affiliate in South Dakota. Since 2013, the museum has hosted a “Smithsonian Sunday” program on the second Sunday of each month.
