SD Historical Society Foundation to Host Social on Sept. 5

A fundraiser to help preserve the state’s history will take place in a historical building in Pierre.

The South Dakota Historical Society Foundation will host an evening social from 7-9 p.m. (CDT) on Thursday, Sept. 5, at the Hitching Horse Inn, 635 N. Euclid Ave.

“This is a great opportunity to learn about the activities of the South Dakota State Historical Society and the South Dakota Historical Society Foundation in a historical setting,” said foundation president Michael Lewis. The foundation is the nonprofit fundraising partner of the South Dakota State Historical Society.

The Hitching Horse Inn was built in 1907. Ron Lutz became the fifth owner of the house when he bought it in 2008 with the intention of making it into a bed-and-breakfast. Jeremy Phelps owns the bar inside the Hitching Horse Inn and helps manage the bed-and-breakfast.

State Historical Society Director Jay D. Vogt, members of the State Historical Society’s board of trustees, Lewis and members of the foundation’s board of directors will be at the social to answer people’s questions about the work of the State Historical Society and foundation.

“The South Dakota State Historical Society has several new projects that people can learn about. Those attending can enjoy hors d’oeuvres, beverages and live background music while visiting with directors and board members,” Lewis said.
A silent auction will take place.

The suggested donation is $20 per person, payable at the door.
Those planning to attend are encouraged to RSVP by calling (605) 773-6346 or emailing info@sdhsf.org. However, people are welcome to attend the social without making a reservation.

Sponsors include Country Carpet & Flooring, Pryntcomm, Days Inn, Clausen & Rice LLP CPA, May Adam Gerdes & Thompson LLP and Pierre Inn & Suites.

The South Dakota Historical Society Foundation is a private charitable nonprofit that seeks funding to assist the South Dakota State Historical Society in programming and projects to preserve South Dakota’s history and heritage for future generations.
