Completed in 1989, the 63,000-square-foot Cultural Heritage Center is the State of South Dakota's lasting legacy centennial projects and the headquarters for the State Historical Society. This $6.5 million facility brings the staff, service, and collections of all the Society's Pierre-based programs into a single building.

  • The prehistoric and historic people of South Dakota Archaeology is the way of reading that message and understanding how people used to live in the area of South Dakota.

  • The South Dakota State Archives collects and preserves permanently valuable government and organizational records, personal papers, publications, photographs, maps, and sound and video recordings which document the history of South Dakota, and makes them available to the public, for the benefit of state agencies and the people of South Dakota.

  • The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) manages the National Register of Historic Places program of the National Park Service in South Dakota.

  • The Museum of the South Dakota State Historical Society collects, preserves, and interprets the social, political, and cultural history of the State of South Dakota and Dakota Territory. The museum makes its collections available through exhibitions, loans to other museums, and publications. The collections in storage are open for study by appointment.

  • As part of the South Dakota State Historical Society, the Press preserves, researches, and promotes the evidence of South Dakota's colorful culture and heritage.
